CHAPTER TWELVE

What the fuck, Reese? Morgan texted. The one time I actually get up and go to the studio, and you're not there?

Morgan sighed as she paced around the entrance way. She spotted some of the trust fund art babies at their workstations, but they were so consumed by Sonic Youth on their laptops and their silk screening that they didn't even seem to notice Morgan. When she finally decided to go in, no one paid her any mind. She went through her desk, cleaned up a few things, and then added the tiny Christmas angel she had taken from her mom's place to the nest of tumbled stones and crystals.

What? Reese replied ten minutes later. The one time I get some action, and you're there? The world does not want us to be together, my dear Morgan.

Don't say that, she wrote back. That's tempting fate.

Oh please. The only thing tempting is this man in my bed. You should see him.

Before Morgan could ask if Reese could have lunch later, he sent her a photo. A tall, dark and handsome man was curled up in Reese's bed sheets, sleeping almost as if he were a little kid with the pillow clutched to his chest.

Nice, huh? Reese wrote. I met him at a club and he knew who Candy Darling was. So I had to bring him back.

Morgan smiled. Reese was never a huge Warhol fan, but the people around Warhol in the 1960s. Reese didn't like the soup cans or the esoteric quotes that made it into dorm rooms, but the hangers on and the blowjob short films. Remembering this fact about him made Morgan miss Reese that much more. How long had it been since they had seen one another? A couple weeks, at least. While they talked almost daily, seeing Reese's face not facilitated by a computer screen was becoming more and more rare.

I didn't think you'd be around, Reese confessed after a moment. Doesn't your girl come back today?

Yes! Finally. God that was a brutal tour.

Over the past two weeks, Morgan had been recapping Reese on all Val's adventures in the states and some of their sexy exploits, but even those seemed like mere vignettes among car trouble, food poisoning, and a brutal heat wave—not to mention Morgan's crushing loneliness while Val had been gone. Morgan used to pride herself on never getting lonely; she thrived on being alone in her apartment and anytime she wanted to talk to someone, there was Skype or text messages or even message boards that she could read through and troll. She could spend weeks and weeks alone, only getting groceries and making small talk with cashiers. If she was really hard up for company, then she'd get a tea at the tea store and then walk across to the sex shop. They knew her well in there; she had drawn them a couple logos early on in her career, and then taken in some of her smutty short story zines to sell.
